ALL ABOUT US

Learn About the Georgia Tech Equestrian Club

The Georgia Tech Equestrian Club is excited to welcome all students into our family! Even if you have no prior experience, you are welcome to lesson and compete with us, or just become a member of the club. Our instructors are used to working with riders of all levels. We are a multidisciplinary club with huntseat, western, and dressage available for those who want to continue developing their skills in those disciplines, or try a new one!

If you're worried about owning a horse, our trainers provide the horses we ride for our lessons, and the school that hosts each show provides you with a horse to compete on. We travel across the region for shows, and practice locally. We have carpools set up so that members without cars can still make it to these events!

Finally, alumnae who competed with us as undergraduates are welcome to ride with us and compete in alumni classes.

The Club

Any student, whether they're part time, graduate or undergraduate, at Georgia Tech can join the club. The club is the portion of the team that does not compete. Members are encouraged to join our monthly meetings, lesson with our trainers and team members, and come to all of our events. Lots of events are scheduled throughout the school year that join the club and team members together, such as trail rides and team dinners. These are great ways to bond with fellow horse enthusiasts!  Club members are also encouraged to lesson with our trainers and spectate at shows.

The Team

Georgia Tech does not offer riding as a varsity sport, but we do have a great club team! Team members must be full time undergraduate students. Team members fall under the umbrella of the GT Equestrian Club, as well as being team members.  The huntseat and western riders show in IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) sanctioned shows in our region. We compete against the other schools in our region (Zone 5, Region 2): Auburn University, Berry College, Emory University, Georgia College and State University, Georgia State University, Judson College, Kennesaw State University, Mississippi State University, University of Alabama, University of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of North Alabama, University of North Georgia, and University of West Georgia. Riders who show can be of any skill level; IHSA classes range from walk/trot to open fences. The dressage riders show in IDA (Intercollegiate Dressage Association) sanctioned shows in our region. We compete against other Region J schools including Florida State University, University of Florida, and Stetson University. IDA classes range from Introductory to First Level.

Our shows differ from most shows in one major way. The day of the show, we arrive at the venue and draw our horse(s) out of a hat. We are not allowed to warm this horse up (other than one warm up jump prior to a course), and must compete on the horse we draw. Our rides are judged entirely on our equitation. How the horse shows is generally set aside, as we ride both exceptional horses, and those lacking in show experience. Our team is funded in part by the Georgia Tech Student Government Association, but is mostly funded by our own efforts. All of the teams show entries are paid for by the club, as well as much of their travel expenses. We strive to provide all riders the opportunity to show with our team.
